When I was researching my South Korea haul in advance of a recent trip to Seoul, the K-beauty capital, there was a specific product that kept catching my eye in just about every TikTok I stumbled upon: lip essences.

I had, of course, heard of facial essences, an ultra-hydrating step that sits between cleansing and moisturising and typically replaces toner, which had a reputation for being drying. Lip essences, however, were new to me. After spending more time than I’d like to admit combing the aisles of Olive Young, Korea’s ubiquitous beauty mecca, I dived into the category, which is now a staple addition to my lip care. As a lip balm obsessive, I am always on the hunt for a treatment that imparts moisture-rich ingredients to dry, chapped lips – and that is what lip essences are all about.
“A lip essence is a treatment-focused lip care product that combines intensive hydration with nourishing skincare ingredients,” explains dermatologist Dr Jinah Yoo. “Unlike a traditional lip balm, which primarily protects the lips, a lip essence is designed to actively improve lip condition. It is also typically lighter in texture than a lip mask, which is formulated for deeper, overnight repair.”
For the reasons Dr Yoo explains above, and given the global influence of K-beauty practices, it is no surprise that they are gaining popularity. As the dermatologist notes, “Consumers are increasingly treating lip care as an extension of skincare. Lip essences appeal to this mindset by offering targeted hydration, barrier support, and treatment benefits in one product.”
Their rise reflects a broader shift within the beauty industry: the “skinification” of each part of our routine, from our scalps to body care and even make-up. Lip products are no longer about a superficial gloss; they need to be deeply hydrating. Dr Yoo also attributes it to the “demand for multifunctional products, increased focus on self-care, and the popularity of lip-focused content on social media. Consumers are seeking products that deliver both cosmetic and skincare benefits.”
