A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about what I lovingly described as”corner-shop chic”: that miscellaneous hodgepodge of clothing you throw on when popping out for a hangover-curing Lucozade the morning after the night before. Brain-fried summer dressing at its purest, the look might involve a pair of silk shorts and stilettos à la Phoebe Philo, or, if you’re Gracie Abrams, tracksuit bottoms with a spring/summer 2003 Balenciaga top and Chanel slingbacks.
Ideal for a quick stop by the Radio 1 Live Lounge, Gracie’s look served as a reminder that the best outfits come together by throwing a few incoherent components together. Granted, most of us aren’t pairing worn-out pyjama bottoms with new-season Chanel, but a girl can dream. Nor do we all have Paul Mescal waiting at home. Then again, if you live in east London, there is no shortage of similarly moustachioed alternatives should you feel inclined.

With a little help from stylist Spencer Singer – who is also responsible for the artfully mismatched wardrobes of other Gen-Z fashion plates Lily-Rose Depp and Billie Eilish – Gracie’s personal style has long erred on the side of eclecticism. (I mean, even on this year’s Met Gala red carpet, she opted for Klimt-inspired Chanel over the more predictable naked-dressing route.) This week’s embrace of the Nisa Local ’fit follows the same logic. Better still, it’s a look that can be recreated with little more than a sturdy pair of shoes and a few Sports Direct staples. Which is perhaps the point: corner-shop chic belongs to everyone.
