Steven Spielberg’s wife Kate Capshaw gave up Hollywood for painting, and her new work is being displayed at the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Illinois.

The 72-year-old star, who first met her husband on set of the 1984 film Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, posed next to her painting in an Instagram post shared on Wednesday.

Capshaw constructed a portrait of the Obamas’ late personal chef, Tafari Campbell, which is now hanging inside the museum at the onsite restaurant Tafari’s Kitchen.

Campbell passed away in 2023 after drowning while paddle boarding on the Edgartown Great Pond which is located near Obama’s Martha’s Vineyard home.

In a press release released last week, the Obama Foundation stated: ‘It honors the award-winning former culinary team member and beloved personal chef to the Obama family who tragically passed away in 2023.’

Capshaw paused for photos next to the portrait while wearing a pair of blue jeans as well as a white shirt and black blazer.

Capshaw began working as a teacher before she relocated to New York City to pursue her passion for acting.

Her first role landed her an appearance in episodes of the crime drama soap opera The Edge Of Night.

The following year, she starred in the comedy A Little Sex and later joined Dennis Quaid, Max von Sydow and Christopher Plummer in the sci-fi action movie Dreamscape (1984).

That same year, she landed a major role as the character of Willie Scott alongside Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom.

The project had been directed by her now-husband Steven Spielberg who was also behind Indiana Jones And Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981).

She would go on to also star in SpaceCamp (1986), Black Rain (1989), Love Affair (1994), The Alarmist (1997) and The Love Letter (1999).

Her final acting credits are the TV movies A Girl Thing (2001) and Due East (2002).

Capshaw stepped away from the screen to focus on raising her family and also began to pursue her new passion for painting.

The retired actress and Spielberg, who tied the knot in 1991, are parents to seven children.

Capshaw had previously been married to Robert Capshaw and the pair welcomed daughter Jessica, 49. The star also adopted a son named Theo, 37, before her marriage to the Oscar-winning director.

Spielberg was also married to Amy Irving from 1985 through 1989, and the pair share son Max, 41.

After saying ‘I do,’ Capshaw and Spielberg welcomed four more children together: Sasha, 36, Sawyer, 34, Mikaela, 30 and Destry, 29.

Capshaw’s first painting class was in 2001 with her daughter, which she reflected on during an interview with Artnet in 2024.

‘But once I started those classes, I knew that this was a place I needed to be and wanted to be. It just felt joyous,’ she expressed.

The artist focused on doing portraits of homeless youth and also told the outlet, ‘I think I had an intuitive feel for capturing the feeling of a person.

‘Before drawing people, I took photographs of people. I was the family photographer.’

Back in 2019, some of her portraits were selected as a finalist in The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition (Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery).

Her solo exhibition, Kate Capshaw: Exclusive Tonsorial Services, was displayed at the Perez Art Museum Miami in 2024.

The National Portrait Gallery commissioned Capshaw to paint a portrait of Spielberg in 2022.

It was first displayed last year at the Portrait of a Nation gala and will continue to be presented through October 2026.

‘I was very moved,’ Capshaw told Vanity Fair in regards to being asked to do a portrait of her husband.

‘I felt the honor. I felt the heft. I know this man, and I know how large he is, and I also know how very intimate he is.’
