Vintage-inspired manicures are becoming more popular than ever. First, polka-dot nails were spotted everywhere, then floral designs started trending. Now, cherry French nails – a twist on a classic French manicure using a red base and a bright white tip – are the look of choice for celebrities. While modern 3D elements and gemstones are fun, there’s a lot to be said for something simple yet striking. British singer Sienna Spiro is currently wearing a chic, cherry French set by celebrity manicurist Michelle Humphrey, who tells British Vogue exactly how to recreate it, below.

Why are cherry French nails popular right now?

Humphrey, who has worked with everyone from Dua Lipa to Olivia Dean, says that cherry French nails are ideal for the summer because they’re an instant mood lifter. “French manicures have also made a huge comeback this year, so cherry French nails felt like a playful twist on two popular choices,” she adds. While red is timeless, the crisp white tip gives it a cool edge. “The tone of red is really important to perfecting the look,” she explains. “If you go too pillar-box bright, it can quickly start to feel festive (aka Santa hat territory) rather than glamorous,” she says. The almond shape is also key. “On a shorter nail length, the manicure would have a completely different feel and lose some of that vintage elegance.”
