Emma Watson has been something of an elusive presence over the past few years. Understandably so, given she spent much of her youth as one of the most photographed teenagers on the planet. Aside from the occasional podcast appearance or Burning Man cameo, the actor has largely devoted her time to activism, with her wardrobe reflecting this shift. Case in point: the monochrome Jacquemus dress she wore yesterday, while attending The Royal Foundation’s United for Wildlife event in London.

Joined by Prince William and Benedict Cumberbatch, Emma’s look offered a Parisienne take on heatwave dressing. Consider the scoop-neck top and statement skirt a more polished approach to summer survival dressing than all those tank tops and flip-flops. It also served as a timely reminder that this year’s statement skirt trend can work just as well in boiling temperatures, provided you avoid anything knitted or woollen and stick firmly to cotton.

Although she may be reluctant to step into the spotlight these days, she has been consistent in her allegiance to French-girl style. Last year, Watson appeared at Cannes in a series of mini shift dresses that nodded to Jane Birkin (albeit in a more contemporary colour palette). So, if you find yourself reaching for the same worn-out heatwave uniform today, perhaps take inspiration from Emma’s simple but effective summer style in colour-blocked Jacquemus.
