Once relegated to medicated shampoos and niche treatments, the scalp now occupies a central position in conversations around hair health. The reasoning is straightforward: every strand emerges from a living follicle on the scalp, meaning the condition of that skin can influence how effectively hair grows, sheds and renews itself over time.

When it comes to the tell-tale signs that the scalp is suffering, symptoms often vary. “A lot of people don’t realise that the scalp has a protective barrier in exactly the same way the skin on the face does,” explains aesthetic doctor Dr Richard Devine. “When that barrier becomes compromised, the scalp can feel itchy, tight, sensitive or uncomfortable. You may notice dryness, flaking, redness or increased irritation after washing or styling. Interestingly, a damaged scalp barrier doesn’t always lead to dryness – in some cases, it can actually trigger excess oil production as the scalp tries to compensate”, he continues.

That doesn’t mean a serum promising to relieve all such symptoms can perform miracles. Hair quality and growth remain governed by a complex interplay of genetics, hormones, age and health, and any product promising dramatic transformation should be approached with caution.

Nevertheless, Dr Devine stresses, “Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Your hair follicles sit within the scalp, so if that environment is inflamed, irritated or out of balance, it can affect the quality of the hair that’s being produced. While scalp health isn’t the only factor involved in hair growth, creating a healthy foundation can help support stronger, shinier and more resilient hair over time.”

Aesthetic nurse Anastasia Koles agrees: “Certain scalp serums can help create a healthier environment for the follicle by improving hydration, reducing inflammation and supporting the scalp barrier. Some ingredients may also help support follicle function and the hair growth cycle.”
