For some people, the end of June signals three weeks of Wimbledon immersion. But I have never been, nor will I probably ever be, that girl. My knowledge of tennis extends little beyond the plot of Challengers and hazy memories of playing Wii Tennis circa 2010. Still, even with my limited sporting expertise, I can appreciate that when it comes to turning a look, tennis stars know exactly what they’re doing.
Consider the Williams sisters, Ana Ivanović, Maria Sharapova, and, my personal favourite, Anna Kournikova, who brought a distinct brand of Y2K glamour to the game, memorably wielding an 11-carat pink diamond ring from fiancé Enrique Iglesias at the Australian Open in 2004. A trip through their archives should serve as a reminder to all of us this summer: if these women could look effortlessly chic while sprinting back and forth beneath the sun, there’s no reason the rest of us should be condemned to old T-shirts and ill-fitting shorts.
With that in mind, here are a handful of throwback moments to inspire your off-court look.
