Speaking to a hairdresser a couple of weeks ago, I asked the uninspiring question: “What is everyone obsessed with at the moment? What are all the girls asking for?” To which she replied, with a slightly pained look, “It’s all about Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.”
As someone who has written about this woman’s wardrobe on a biweekly basis for the past four months, I could sympathise with the vacant expression she adopted while describing why everyone wants that same icy blonde shade. “This must have been how they felt about ‘The Rachel’ in the ’90s,” she concluded, referring to the caramel-coloured, shoulder-grazing style that had everyone in a chokehold during the decade, thanks to Jennifer Aniston’s girl-next-door appeal.
After some extensive research (Googling the cast of Friends while left alone with my thoughts in the salon chair), I raised the question: what about “The Monica”? With her glossy bob and wardrobe of shift dresses, shouldn’t she also have inspired mass haircut fever? The more I scrolled, the more I realised that Courteney Cox (her wardrobe is largely interchangeable with her on-screen character’s), also deserves her flowers. It’s time we gave her credit for the ’90s It-girl she was.
