Fans have been left heartbroken following the news of Gone Fishing’s terrier Ted death earlier this week.

The Patterdale Terrier mix had passed away at the age of 13, having cemented himself as a key part of BBC’s Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.

The pooch, who was owned by the show’s executive producer Lisa Clark, first joined Bob, 66, and Paul, 67, on screen in 2020, and soon became a permanent feature on the series through its following seasons after becoming a big hit with viewers.

Following his passing, Bob and Paul led tributes to the canine member of their Gone Fishing family, admitting they were both going to ‘miss him so much’.

But Ted is not the first four-legged friend fans have loved and lost over the years, from After Life’s Brandy to EastEnders icon Wellard.

Here Daily Mail looks at all the famous pet pooches no longer with us….

After Life’s Brandy

Known to viewers of the Netflix comedy as Brandy, Ricky Gervais’ loyal sidekick, Vislor Antilly Anti passed away peacefully at her home in Oxfordshire in 2025.

The actor uploaded a photo of himself and Anti sat on a park bench, from the series, to share the news with fans on X.

He wrote: ‘Sad News. ‘Anti’, who played ‘Brandy’ in AfterLife, has died. She was 13 and a very good girl.’

The actor later added in a statement: ‘This is such sad news. Anti was a beautiful soul. We hit it off straight away and she helped make After Life my favourite filming experience of all time.

‘I’m so glad that I told her a hundred times a day that she was a very good girl.’

In 2018, Anti was cast personally by Ricky as Brandy, Tony Johnson’s (Ricky) trusty companion.

The black comedy-drama, which premiered in 2019, follows the story of newspaper journalist Tony who is struggling to come to terms with the death of his wife Lisa (played by Kerry Godliman).

The show hit the Number 1 spot on Netflix’s most-watched programmes around the globe.

Anti gained worldwide fame, causing Ricky to have to repeatedly promise fans on social media that ‘the dog does not die’ in the run-up to every season, earning the title of ‘The World’s Most Famous Dog’ for her role as a faithful friend to Tony and helping him deal with the grief of the loss of Lisa.

In 2022, Anti’s owner revealed she is showered with the same levels of affection at home where she is treated as the ‘queen of the family’.

Owner and trainer Ash Foster, who has had her since the day she was born, told the Daily Mail, that Anti remained dedicated to her work on film sets – where she has impressed the likes of George Clooney, Tom Cruise and Martin Clunes.

She earned her first taste of fame alongside Tom Cruise in Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow in 2014, going on to appear with Michael Fassbender in Trespass Against Us and George Clooney in The Midnight Sky, who then went on to cast Anti in his 2023 release The Boys in the Boat.

Her work in TV included BBC’s The Capture alongside Holliday Grainger and Ron Perlman, ITV’s Doc Martin, where she performed stunts with Martin Clunes, Britain’s Got More Talent with David Walliams, and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

Her final stunt on camera was released in July 2024, season 23, episode 2 of Midsomer Murders, The Debt of Lies, playing a retired police dog who detains the murderer before retiring in real life from film and TV at 11 years old.

EastEnders’ Wellard II

EastEnders viewers were left reeling after after the off-screen death of popular pooch, road sweeper Robbie Jackson’s sidekick Wellard II was announced in 2017.

Robbie’s sister Sonia, played by Natalie Cassidy revealed the devastating news as she visited June Brown’s character Dot Cotton in hospital.

She said: ‘Robbie lost Wellard II a while back’.

The loveable Belgian Tervuren was a hit with viewers who enjoyed his on-screen partnership with devoted Robbie, played by Dean Gaffney.

The pet was Robbie’s second canine companion after the original Wellard was killed off in 2008.

Wellard I made his first appearance in 1994 and quickly gained a huge fan following.  Viewers balked after a 2005 storyline saw him threatened with euthanasia after he bit Ian Beale on the rear.

The duofirst auditioned for the show in Cardiff, when judge Simon Cowell described him as ‘one of the best dancing dogs I’ve ever seen’.

Their dog trick act has continued to be a roaring success – in the same year Pudsey had a role in the BBC TV version of the book Mr Stink by David Walliams.

The duo even met the Queen after taking part in the Royal Variety Performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2012.

Blue Peter’s Petra

Among Blue Peter’s many cherished pets, Petra the dog was among the favourites – with many fans visiting for years her statue in the programme’s garden at BBC Television Centre in west London.

Yet it only emerged years after her death how a deception had been perpetrated on viewers, revealed in 2008 by the show’s former editor Biddy Baxter – who told how Petra was actually an emergency replacement found when an original choice of dog had died two days after her debut.

Baxter recalled how on the last episode before Christmas 1962, the BBC’s head of children’s television Owen Reed appeared on the screen with a large cardboard box covered with festive paper and ribbons.

He presented it to Christopher Trace and Valerie Singleton, who cut the ribbon, opened the box and showed off a tiny eight-week-old black-and-brown puppy.

Baxter, editor from 1962 to 1988, said: ‘It was the dog’s first and last TV appearance. Two days later she died of distemper.

‘It was unthinkable to traumatise our youngest viewers by giving them the sad news, so the producer Edward Barnes and I set off in his Mini to trawl London for the dead pup’s lookalike.

‘It wasn’t until we reached Lewisham that we struck lucky. In a dingy shop window there was one small browny-black puppy, shivering in the corner of a pen. Not a single viewer spotted the swap.’

The replacement dog, named Petra in a viewers’ vote, appeared until 1977.

‘This was you on Sunday waiting for your Dad to come back and he had only gone out to the car x We are all going to miss you so much.’

Their fellow Gogglebox star Izzi Warner – who appears on the show with her sister Ellie – took to the comments section to share her condolences with the family.

She said: ‘Awww rest in peace Dave, sending you all lots of love xx.’

The sad news came just months after the beloved dog left Gogglebox viewers in stitches in April when he unexpectedly jumped on screen.

Energetic Dave caused chaos on screen when he jumped up into the frame to get involved when Tom Sr began to whistle, grabbing the dog’s attention.

Pouncing on to the chair, the hilarious moment saw Dave knock Tom off of his chair completely – leaving the lorry driver on his back with his legs in the air.

Although actress Anne Charleston who played Madge said the actors weren’t thrilled with the scene.

‘The whole cast was mortified about that! It reduced it to a three-year-old’s programme. It was very strange,’ she told Holy Soap in 2010.

Trainer Luke Hura previously revealed the four-legged star was earning more than some of the human actors on the show, estimating his worth between $100,000 and $200,000.
