The director of The Devil Wears Prada 2 has revealed why viewers won’t be seeing Andy Sachs’ unpopular boyfriend in the long-awaited sequel.

Adrian Grenier famously played Nate Cooper, Sachs’ boyfriend whose relationship with her crumbled under the pressure of her demanding job.

While Sachs has a new love interest in the sequel, viewers wondering what may have come of her relationship with Cooper were left disappointed when Grenier revealed he wasn’t asked to be in the sequel.

Now filmmaker David Frankel has revealed why they were unable to accommodate Cooper into the story.

Frankel, 67, told Entertainment Weekly he considered including Grenier, 49, in a cameo but was prevented due to time constraints.

‘I had an idea about sneaking him into a cameo, and, in the end, it was just too late in our production schedule to make it happen,’ he told the publication.

Frankel said there simply ‘wasn’t time’ to include Cooper into the story.

Frankel was unable to reveal what Cooper would have done in the cameo but praised Grenier’s appearance in a Starbucks commercial which poked fun at the snubbing.

‘I think I’m thrilled that he did a Starbucks commercial, which was really funny and so self-effacing,’ he told the outlet. ‘I love the humility and the comedy of it!’

Grenier previously admitted it was a ‘disappointment’ that he was snubbed but remained optimistic he would ‘obviously’ get a callback in the future for a spinoff.

He also said that he believed that he ‘didn’t get the call’ to return for the sequel because of the ‘backlash’ towards his character’s actions in the original film.

‘We’re all fans of the movie, whether or not we’re in it,’ he told Page Six. ‘Obviously, it was a disappointment that I didn’t get the call to be in the sequel, but I also understand there’s some backlash with Nate, the character, so that might have something to do with it.’

‘But I think that just leaves room for a spinoff,’ he added. ‘Either way, it’s a disappointment. Either way, it leaves room for a beautiful spinoff in which Nate has his own film.’

Fans did not take kindly to Grenier’s character, with viewers blasting Cooper for being unsupportive and self-centered amid his girlfriend’s job troubles.

‘I didn’t see some of the subtleties and the nuance of this character and what it represented in the film until the masses came online and started to push against the character and throw him under the bus, and I got flak,’ he told Entertainment Weekly in June 2021.

‘All those memes that came out were shocking to me,’ he admitted over a decade after the original film’s release.

‘It hadn’t occurred to me until I started to really think about it,’ he continued. ‘And perhaps it was because I was as immature as Nate was at the time.’

He admitted that his character was ‘very selfish and self-involved.’

‘He wasn’t extending himself to support Andy in her career,’ he said after he took ‘time to reflect’ about his character’s ‘shortcomings.’

He said after ‘much deliberation,’ he ended up agreeing to ‘the truth in that perspective.’

In the first movie, Andy and Nate broke up but reconnected at the end before she quit her job as Miranda’s assistant.

In their final meetup, the widely disliked boyfriend character revealed he was moving to Boston for a new chef gig.

Following the 2006 release of the original movie, Grenier went on to star in Entourage, Clickbait among many others and also added producing, directing and environmental activism to his resume.

He is also a father to two children and shares sons Seiko, two, and Evren, nearly one, with his wife Jordan Roemmele.

He currently resides on a ranch in Texas with his wife.
