Fine hair is more fragile than you think. I would know. I’ve had fine hair my whole life. Treating my delicate strands with care, love and the proper products is the only thing that helps my hair type look healthier, fuller and more voluminous – and that begins with the choice of hairbrush. The secret to selecting the right brush for fine hair matters more than you may think.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The key to properly caring for fine hair is first to understand what it is. “Fine hair refers to the diameter of each hair strand,” explains consultant dermatologist Dr Aamna Adel. “People with fine hair have strands that are naturally smaller in circumference, making them feel soft and delicate. This is different from low-density or “thin” hair, which refers to the number of hairs growing on the scalp. Someone can have fine hair with high density, meaning they have lots of hair, or coarse hair with low density.”

With this in mind, when it comes to hair tools, specifically brushing the hair, there is a proper technique to consider – and mistakes to avoid to prevent it from looking flat. “Many people with fine hair are wary of brushing because they’re worried about breakage, but done correctly, it’s one of the best things you can do for hair quality and scalp health,” reveals hairdresser Zoe Irwin.

“Brushing is one of the most undervalued parts of hair care. The scalp naturally produces sebum, which we often think of negatively because it can make the roots look oily. But that sebum is actually incredibly protective for the hair. When you brush thoroughly and gently, especially in the morning and before bed, you’re distributing those natural oils from root to tip, which helps improve the overall condition, shine and resilience of the hair.”
