Physical copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 won’t have a disc, and now multiple retailers have announced they won’t be selling pre-orders as a result.
After Rockstar Games finally announced the price of the game yesterday and revealed GTA 6‘s Standard and Ultimate Editions, it was confirmed that physical copies will only include a digital download code in the box and no disc.
One explanation could be that Rockstar is trying to minimize the risk of leaks, but many fans hoping to secure a physical copy are disappointed.
“First look at GTA 6 physical edition,” reads one Reddit post with a picture of an empty game box. Another replied, “Don’t forget the slip [of] paper with the code. Physical media is doomed.”
One fan said, “I got a disc drive for my PS5 Pro just for this. **Sigh**”
“Got brand new PS5 Slim digital from outlet cause it was much cheaper [a] couple days before they announced price increase,” another fan wrote. “Was planning to buy disk drive so I can later sell console and the game (mainly play on pc). But I won’t be able to sell the game unless I sell my account as well lol.”
The lack of a physical disc has also led certain retailers to stop selling pre-orders altogether as a policy, including Canadian retailer VGP, which is known for regular restocks of rare physical games (via GamesRadar).
